WELCOME, FRIENDS!
“Bread for all,
and roses, too!”
It was the declaration of Helen Todd, American women's suffrage activist, in 1911. In a rousing essay about her campaign for women’s voting rights, she called for bread—symbolizing home, shelter, and security—and roses—symbolizing music, education, nature, and books—to "be the heritage of every child that is born" in the United States.
The phrase "bread and roses" caught on. Over the last century, it has become a political slogan championing social and economic justice, two causes we hold close to our hearts.
Those principles in mind, Bread + Roses is a hybrid bookstore-café that was born to nourish your body, enrich your mind, and celebrate your soul.
